Billy Trail

The Billy Trail is a public path for walkers, cyclists and horse riders that runs down the western edge of Hayling Island in Hampshire. It follows the track of an old railway line closed by Beeching in the early 1960s. The path actually runs almost all the way to Havant station where the old Billy line joined the main railway network. I walked the trail with my faithful companion Sadie and a friend.

This is the view back towards the mainland from the start of the Billy trail. The Langstone bridge can be seen from here. The old railway line had its own bridge, now dismantled.

This noticeboard shows the track of the Billy trail, which is also National Cycle Route 2 which goes down to the ferry across the mouth of Langstone Harbour, Hayling Island to the right and Portsmouth to the left.

 Sadie has a swim.

Some of the stuff you could see

Finally - the beach at the south of the island

After a stop for sandwiches and coffee, time to walk back

 Some more information

For most of the path the horse trail is segregated. The path is relatively smooth and flat. No hills to worry about if you are cycling.

Back on the mainland section we found this graffiti

I think was once graffiti but obviously water runs down this part of the wall so there is rust and algae/lichen to add to the colour of the chalk. Personally I find more beauty in this than the graffiti,

 Girl power?

A surprise garden decorated with? No, not Lego, electric terminal blocks.

Finally too tired to stand we are back home

  1. Nice photos! Looks almost like on my island - except the beach huts, and the lovely dogs. But we have benches, skylines and graffiti too :)
Pic 3 could be a classic masterpiece.
