Then east to Prinsted to join the path onto Thorney Island

It is a bit cheeky to call it an island. There are two tidal channels that cross the island but the land separating Thorney Island from the rest of England was reclaimed in 1870.
Finally on the coast path we set off around the 'island' in a clockwise direction.
Sadie had to have a swim of course. She normally doesn't like the sea much but there were no waves to scare here here.
Of course, being a coastal island there was a sailing club.
A single file bridge looking back the way we came. I have no idea who Leslie Morris is, or who his Wednesday men are. They could be engineers from the military base.
After the 'Great Deep' Channel all the land is military, you have to go through a locked gate bristling with CCTV cameras. There is an intercom so you can ask to be let in. There is also a now disused airfield. Shortly we came across a church and it seemed like a good place for a break.
Hmm a path across the sea - we decided not to take this path!
There is a beach on the south end of the island now the tide was going out but we decided not to stop as we had just had a rest. Sadie did find a nice muddy puddle though.
We found somewhere else to sit down for a bit. A couple of rather nice memorial seats
The metal box to the left contains a memorial book with many messages. While Sadie wonders if there are any rabbits. Somehow I doubt it, Thorney Island is so low lying they would probably drown if they tried to dig a hole. Anyway, she didn't find any.
Saw quite a few of these! The path is mostly just a narrow strip around the edge of the island, not ideal for walking and chatting but the views were nice.
There were quite a few Brent Geese on the water and mudflats, and sometimes flying too.
Sometimes I like to get things in perspective :)
Impressive reedbeds
Back to the boat club from the other side and nearly the end of our walk.
And then after a lovely walk with my friend and my dog it was time to head home.
Sunset over the A259 |
But... I can hardly see the A259 :))
ReplyDeleteJust as well, it's not a pretty sight.
